Initial Reations to Second Life

I have never really played a game like Second Life before, so it was really interesting to reflect on what my first instincts were when I created my character. I know that some other people explored different places by walking around and using the "teleport" function, while others tried to engage with other people in conversation. I found that my first instinct was to play around with the different appearances that I could have. After altering my appearance just for fun, I found that many of the subconscious choices that I made were not like how I am in real life. I happened to choose a male as my avatar, but I chose a male who had long hair and colored glasses, and I don't have either. When I altered his appearance, I made him tall and I made him have a much bigger upper body than lower body, which I don't think describe me in real life at all. While altering my character's appearance, I didn't consciously think about what I was doing and I didn't purposely make him like or unlike me in real life. I just tried not to think about that and just go with what looked interesting. The result was a character that was not like me at all.

I plan to go back to Second Life and play a little bit more to learn about the surrounding environment. I wonder whether people treat other people differently in conversation depending on appearance or depending on personality. I am curious to learn more about this "second life," mostly because I have never really used anything like it before.
