I think the first thing that I think we should do in class
is talk about how internet research is different from non-internet research,
such that interested parties demand the consideration of a different ethics of
research. That is, I want to know: How are the ethics of internet-based
research different from non-internet-based research, and why is this a
discussion that some – Miller et al, Boellstorff et al, and Markham et al in
particular – believe we should be having? I am not convinced that the nature of
research is so significantly different between the two. Perhaps this ventures
into a broader question about “common sense” (a concept of which I am very
skeptical), but I think it’s still worth talking about.
