The Ethics of Internet-based Research...or just Research Ethics?

I think the first thing that I think we should do in class is talk about how internet research is different from non-internet research, such that interested parties demand the consideration of a different ethics of research. That is, I want to know: How are the ethics of internet-based research different from non-internet-based research, and why is this a discussion that some – Miller et al, Boellstorff et al, and Markham et al in particular – believe we should be having? I am not convinced that the nature of research is so significantly different between the two. Perhaps this ventures into a broader question about “common sense” (a concept of which I am very skeptical), but I think it’s still worth talking about.
