Norm breaching in social media

As I talked a little bit about in class today, I used to have awkward experiences friending people on Facebook when I was sort of new to it. I didn't know how well I am supposed to know another person before I send the person a friend request. So it was a question of norms in social media. If I remembered correctly, there was an occasion in which I sat next to someone in class and I talked to her during the pairwise discussions. Then I thought that we could be considered friends, although now I can't remember if we had even introduced ourselves to each other. Later I sent her a friend request on Facebook, and she accepted it. But because the seating in the class was kind of random, we didn't get paired together again, and so didn't talk at all in class. More interestingly, the fact that I friended her on Facebook made it awkward when I met her again. I gradually became aware that maybe we weren't really friends enough to, for example, even say hi to each other when we meet after class. But because I friended her on Facebook, it became really embarrassing when we met again, as neither saying hi nor ignoring her seemed appropriate... and I decided to pretend not having seen her every time. This is an example of how norm breaching in social media can have real-world consequences.
