Social Media Experiment

For my second experiment I decided to model it after tinder "experiments" I had seen in Buzzfeed articles and other articles on facebook over the last year or so with the surge in popularity of dating apps. These experiments usually involved a girl starting conversations or responding to conversations on tinder solely with quotes from a tv show or book. I chose to converse solely with donald trump quotes/tweets. For me this was breaking a social media norm because in my opinion when you are just beginning to get to know someone you would never put out controversial/rude opinions or immediately start discussing topics such as politics and racial issues. I was very intrigued to see how this would turn out because even though St. Louis is the most left leaning part of Missouri, there are still quite a few trump supporters. I swiped right on the first five or so people that came up on the app and sent each of them a message first. Two people didn't respond, one simply responded "lol" and the remaining two I actually "conversed" with. I did my best to make sure that the conversations were logical even though I was only responding with Donald Trump quotes/tweets. Both of the guys that I spoke to seemed confused by the topics that I had chosen to discuss. However, both of them figured out within four messages that I was responding to them with Donald Trump quotes. I asked one of them how he had figured it out so quickly and he said that it was pretty obvious based on the cadence of the quotes. I think the quickness with which the two discovered my experiment is interesting. It shows how distinct Trump's manner of speaking is that two people were able to distinguish it so quickly. I was also surprised by how much effort one of the guys I talked to actually put in to the conversation. Though the messages that I sent were in my opinion rude, arrogant and dismissive of other people, he tried to agree with me and also give my messages a positive spin in his responses. I think the results of my experiment also show what an interesting circumstance we are in nowadays by the fact that our president has such a unique and recognizable cadence and manner of speech.
