Thinking about the first paper
I have begun thinking about which scientist I
would like to interview and gather his/her life history. Because of my double
major and interest in psychology, I have decided to I wanted to interview a
psychologist on campus. This semester, I am taking a really interesting psychology
class on dying and death and I have decided to interview my professor from that
class. I want to learn about why he decided to study death and other end of
life topics. I am intrigued how he ended up in a discipline where he is constantly studying and talking about death, when death is often a taboo
subject. Some preliminary questions I have thought about are how did he get
interested in this subject area, how he studies death and dying from a
psychological perspective, challenges with studying this, and what his lab work
surrounding these topics looks like. I’m still at the very begging stages of
planning this out, so I would love any feedback or ideas people have for
interesting questions!

I'm in this class as well and I find the whole thing incredibly interesting so I can't wait to read some of your notes from your interview with Dr. Carpenter! I'm really interested to see what other people think of his research on dying and death - be they friends, colleagues, students, or the individuals he is actually working with to gather data. Just hearing some of the reactions he has gotten is something I think would be really neat.
ReplyDeleteThe entire concept of death in our society, from my limited perspective at least, seems to be one almost ignored entirely. On this same line, my friend's father studies people diagnosed with terminal brain tumors, specifically their psychological states from delivery of news to death; he is the scientist at this point I am most interested in interviewing. Both people seem to have at least a lowered guard, if one at all, towards subjects that would make the typical individual very uncomfortable, not on any moral level (as discussed with the nuclear bomb scientists), but on a level that I have a hard time conceptualizing into words. There is a certain sadness or gloom that seems to arise when dealing with such subjects and it is beyond me how these two scientists have developed their careers, at least in some part, around this aura of study.
