It’s really interesting that we were talking about what mediums of communication are deemed inappropriate and how those social rules come about, and then by coincidence today, my mom was talking about the South Korean presidential scandal. The president is being impeached and had been firing some of her staff to try to show she was making changes, but then even more people were angry because it turned out that apparently the prime minister had been fired via text message. This, to them, seemed very inappropriate and cowardly. It’s really interesting that so many people fixated on this detail—that he was fired via text message—as something to get angry about. I thought it really accentuated Gershwin’s point, though controversial, about how there are different meanings to the mode of communication utilized.

Beyond that, I find myself much more conscious of my technology use throughout the day as a result of our conversations. I was sad to realize how much (all) of my time was staring at some kind of screen. This may be linked to the fact that I do literally all of my work on my laptop, but even when I’m lounging, I’m on my phone. It came to a crux when I was browsing Facebook on my laptop, got bored, grabbed my phone, and opened the Facebook app. It’s really quite sad.
