I would have to
credit my father for my involvement in Twitter. He joined
the 140-character social networking website in August 2008 as @drjefflo
and has been a frequent tweeter on anything related sports as well as other
matters. After a few months, he enjoyed Twitter so much that he urged me to create
an account. About a year later, I ended up joining as @AdamLolo
and I wish I had done it a lot sooner. With the original @AdamLolo Twitter
account, I followed along with real-time sports information and stayed up to
date with general news. However, about 18 months later, in February of 2011, I
created my main account, @StatsAdam. Around
that time, I began to be a tweeting machine because of all of the statistical
resources I found through the people I followed on Twitter. Then, I also found
many other facets of the site that could benefit me during normal activities.
In my opinion, the
most important addendum to the revolutionizing website is “Twitter via SMS
(Short Messaging Service).” Instead of following along with my Twitter feed throughout
the day, I receive tweets as text messages. I am able to select whomever I
would like and have his or her tweets sent to your phone immediately as they
are posted. This prevents me from diverting my attention: without this
messaging service, I would have to remain on either the Twitter website or the phone
application to stay current. In addition, I can receive breaking news without
having to do anything. It is all sent to me wherever I happen to be.
In my previous blog post,
I delved into the history of Twitter and how the site helped me with regard to writing
articles as well as making connections within the sports community. In
addition, Twitter has also been a huge part of my research as I prepare for my weekly
one-hour sports radio show on KWUR. For the last year, I have co-hosted Bedtime Sports, in which I provide
in-depth analysis on everything in the sports world. Every Sunday this semester
from 11 am to 12 noon central, we preview the upcoming week’s NFL games as well
as provide important information for our listeners. Twitter has been a fantastic
source to help me present my opinions on the show and I look forward to finding
new and exciting ways to use the social networking site.
