With the recent news of mass shootings and the debate over gun ownership and violence, one proposed solution is the "smart gun", a firearm designed to only respond to the user. This is usually done with biometric scanners or worn/implanted RFID tags, but the idea goes back at least 40 years with more primitive magnetic technology: http://www.popsci.com/how-guns-got-smarter
While this could certainly prevent potential shooters from stealing and using weapons (such as the Sandy Hook shooting) and prevent police from being killed by their own weapons during a struggle, it is not without controversy. Past and current smart gun technologies have faced resistance from gun-rights advocates who fear that this would be a form of stricter gun restriction.
Do you think this is a form of increased regulation, or a way for the individual to exert more control over his/her property?
