I saw this article the other day and found it interesting to actually
see 23andMe in the news after discussing it in class at the beginning of the
semester. They are now allowed to offer some of their genetic testing again,
but only to see if people are carriers for certain genetic diseases, such as
cystic fibrosis and sickle cell anemia. They still cannot test for predisposition
to certain diseases such as heart disease because lifestyle factors are many
times more important than the genetics. I think these are important tests for
people to have access to, but I wonder what the advantage is to doing the tests
through this company versus having a doctor, for example an obgyn, prescribe
the test.
