Apple acquires Perceptio

On Monday Apple confirmed the purchase of the machine learning firm Perceptio, which was known to be developing technology to run artificial intelligence on mobile devices while requiring less data (as opposed to current systems that require databases and cloud computing). Apple's acquisition would suggest an increasing interest in imaging AI and recognition technology.
Image-based services are already very significant in social media; in addition to platforms focused on images like Snapchat, Instagram, they play a major role in social networks such as Twitter and Facebook; in 2014 Facebook even introduced a robust facial recognition feature to help you tag people. We can only guess as to what Apple will use imaging AI for, but I think it will involve a smartphone-based feature instead of a social network (Apple has already tried and failed that with "Ping")
