Related to this week's Readings: "Sorry, that DNA test doesn't make you Indigenous"

I wanted to wait until after everyone had posted their responses to this week's readings before posting this piece about what comprises Indigenous Identity and the conflict between (likely inaccurate) genetic evidence for constructing identity and social evidence for constructing identity.

It's important to note, as Tallbear mentions in the audio and as she is quoted in the text of the article itself, that this Western-scientific justification of identity is not consistent with Indigenous ideas of identity as it relates to community and belonging. She says: "[I]t's not just a matter of what you claim, but it's a matter of who claims you." The concept of claiming and being claimed falls into a larger framework of relations and relationality, which I hope to explore further in class tomorrow.
