Emails - Do they make your life easier?

I had a conversation yesterday with a person about emails and technology. He told me that when he got email, everyone said that it would make his life easier - but now he has to spends several hours a week sending hundreds of emails. Why is the increased accessibility of communication so intricately tied with the obligation to respond? Though, from our readings, we see how there are different media ideologies attached to different platforms. Perhaps the more appropriate question here is what is the media ideology of email that requires so much time and attention?

Personally, I check my emails religiously and before I used to have a lot of anxiety about composing emails to professors or other authority figures. Checking emails sometimes provokes a visceral response, such as splitting headaches or a sense of relief. I think email is a very integral part of my professional life - and it definitely has to do with the format.
