Recent posts on this blog have focussed on terrible tragedy, the loss of human identity surrounding biological disaster, the evolution of war into machines for massive amounts of death, and racism. Stepping away from this, I present Frankenweenie. The film is Tim Burton's latest masterpiece and has a very pro-education and pro-science theme. The main protagonist (Victor Frankenstein) is an intelligent child interested in science (and resurrecting the dead), and the value of the pursuit knowledge is a key theme in the film. Frankenweenie offers a very pointed commentary on the current battle between science and, for lack of a better word, mysticism that seems to be taking place in this country. I could not help but notice that Victor's teacher gives a speech reminiscent of Bill Nye's comments on creationism: it is okay to be ignorant, but unfair to force stupidity on your children. If anyone has 90 minutes of free time this weekend, I would highly recomend this thoughtful and very dark film.
